Catalog 11.02

Church built between 1971 and 1973 based on a design by the Udinese architect Luciano Ria. This temple was built to fulfill a vow pronounced in 1944 by the residents of Sappada faced with the dangers of war. Inside the shrine there is a large sculpture by Augusto Murer which portrays the sufferings of war. The most prominent figure in it does not represent the Virgin Mary, as many people believe, but a woman's anguished cry. Because of the ideological affiliation of the artist, the woman's arm raised to the heavens can be interpreted in many contrasting ways.
